Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Web Design

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and web design go hand in hand. We often read stories of web designers and developers and SEO specialists battling it out over on-page code and elements. Sometimes it may seem like an SEO couldn’t care less about user experience and what website visitors look at as long as the search engines are happy.

Since I was 13 years old I wanted to be a web designer. For years and years this is what I associated with who I am – web and graphic design. So while I just wanted to whip up a quick, minimalistic site for Fire Finch SEO with no flashy graphics, it definitely didn’t work out as basic as I had expected. It just didn’t feel complete to slap something together. And I could not bring myself to get started on the rest of the aspects of my new business before it felt complete. So I designed and redesigned and I ended up choosing a theme for this blog before choosing a theme for the main site of Fire Finch SEO. I ended up incorporating the abstract background image into the design of the website and while there is so much more work to do before I’m perfectly happy with it, it feels like it’s getting there.

To me, building a website and optimising a website have always gone hand in hand. One might argue that a lot of web design companies know the basics of SEO, but not enough to actually greatly improve clients’ rankings. And in most cases I definitely believe this to be the truth. When I think of my professional title, I don’t think “Web designer who does SEO” – I think “SEO who comes from an extensive web design background”.
